Robots that Sit on Chairs for You

How you know that warranty means something.

When you buy a new piece of furniture, it comes with a warranty that guarantees a certain number of years of optimal functionality. Have you ever wondered how that timeline is determined?

Well, behind every well-crafted piece of furniture is a series of rigorous tests designed to simulate real-world usage and environmental conditions. Manufacturers understand that furniture needs to withstand daily wear and tear, and thus, they subject their products to a battery of tests to ensure they meet or exceed industry standards.

All the below videos and images were captured at the Global Furniture Group's factories near Toronto, Ontario.

Testing Specific Parts

Chair Seats

These chair seats are impacted and tilted with heavy weights over and over again to ensure they can remain functional with repeated sitting and reclining.

Chair Wheels

Casters and star-bases are spun and rolled around for days on end simulating years of regular use at an accelerated rate.

Chair Arms

Repeatedly sliding, rotating and generally abusing the arms with heavy weights ensure they wont let you down.

Furniture Resilience

Heavy weights and saddled on to tables and cabinets to be certain that tops stay straight and hinges continue swinging freely.

Types of Testing

Below are a few types of tests that may be used to scrutinize various types of furniture and their components:

  • Structural Integrity tests ensures that frames, joints, and connections can withstand the weight and pressure they will encounter during regular use.
  • Material Durability tests assesses the resilience of materials to repeated stress, abrasion, and impact. Evaluating the resistance of upholstery fabrics to fading, pilling, and wear.
  • Environmental Tests expose furniture to extreme temperature variations to assess its resistance to warping, cracking, or discoloration. Testing for resistance to moisture and humidity, crucial for furniture in various climates.
  • Functionality Tests verify the smooth operation of moving parts, such as drawers, hinges, and reclining mechanisms.
  • Safety Tests ensure that furniture meets safety standards, including flammability tests for upholstery materials.
  • Finish and Appearance tests assess the resilience of finishes to scratches, stains, and chemicals. Verifying that the final appearance of the product meets the manufacturer's quality standards.

The Result

Only after the product has been put though it's trials (and maybe after making some design tweaks) is when you get to see and try it yourself. After seeing how rigorous Global is in upholding their commitment to quality, you might be interested in seeing some of their offerings:
